Making a home insurance claim

Making a home insurance claim is pretty straight forward and it is important to contact the insurer in the first instance depending on the severity of the incident.  For example, if your house has been broken into then it is very important to contact the police first so they can carry out their duties before the insurance company get involved.

Assess the damage at first and then contact your home insurance provider and explain to them what has happened. They will note everything down and send you a claim form which you need to fill out fully with the approximation of costs for your replacements or repairs.  Depending on the type of cover you have whether it be ‘new for old’ or indemnity policy; you must work out the costs.

Once the form has completed you must send it back to the insurer and they will make a decision on whether to pay up.  Home insurance providers usually pay out but if it is a big claim them the may hesitate and may want a second opinion.  In this case they will appoint a representative from their organisation to visit the place in question and draw up their own assessment of the damage.  If they are happy then they will reimburse you in full.
